Guest portrait: Human Degree

Many months ago I had my portrait taken by my buddy Arian and recently I saw the final product. His partner Rodney paints on top of the print, using 7 words I submitted. This is one of what will be many portraits of their Human Degree project. It’s a unique combination of mediums and I’m excited to see how the others will look.

The Hipster Grifter: Revealed!

With great shock, and yes, amusement, I discovered the sordid tale of Kari Ferrell, my portrait subject at the die-cutting factory from late February. Turns out, she’s a con-artist of sorts, as revealed by the New York Observer, wanted in the state of Utah, seemingly driven not by lust for riches, but for acceptance and love, considering her penchant for being sexually forward with bearded 20-something guys. Though she lied to me about her job, there was nothing strange or disturbing about her. She was nice and likable, which is presumably what led people to trust her before she conned or swindled them. Gawker used some of my shots of her for a follow-up on the saga. It’s a strange world, isn’t it?

Perfume Modeling

The last day of the shoot in Mauritius I got asked to model for this perfume shoot. The model they had hired ended up in the hospital after getting repeatedly bitten on the face by tropical fish. I’ll be all over billboards in Asia starting this fall!

The Door to Hell

Outside the small town of Darvaza in Turkmenistan, geologists stumbled upon a huge underground cavern while looking for gas deposits. They concluded the cavern was filled with poisonous gas, and decided that the cavern should be lit on fire to burn off the excess. The hole has been burning for more than 35 years since.

The real nightmare is our collective history

I don’t have any idea who took this photograph. It looks to be from WWI. I know that the fright I feel when I look at this photograph is directly related to the terrible things humanity constantly justifies doing.
